Revolutionizing Accessibility: The NMI Magic Seat System

Achieving direct wheelchair access on high-floor coaches—without significant loss of seating—was once thought impossible.

In response to National Express’ industry guidelines for the next generation of coaches, which called for a minimum of 49 passenger seats and the ability for wheelchair users to independently manoeuvre into a designated bay, NMI rose to the challenge. The only assistance required from the driver would be to secure the wheelchair safely.

Introducing NMI and the Magic Seat System

The result of our innovation is the design, patent, and production of the NMI Magic Seat System—a solution that fully meets the industry’s rigorous requirements.

The Magic Seats replace the two front seats of the coach. Visually identical to the standard seating, they are uniquely mounted on specially engineered NMI bases. When wheelchair access is needed, the driver simply removes the seat cushions and reconfigures the seats to create a secure wheelchair bay.

One seat is equipped with a foot-operated ratchet mechanism and integrated webbing belts to safely secure the wheelchair. Once positioned, the passenger benefits from a seatback and a three-point safety belt for maximum security.

Critically, only one seat is removed when accommodating a wheelchair passenger, ensuring minimal impact on overall seating capacity.

Compliance and Certification

The Magic Seat System is fully tested and compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). It meets all positional and strength requirements outlined in EC Directive 76/115/EEC (as amended by 2005/41/EC) and satisfies the wheelchair and occupant restraint anchorage standards specified in section 3.8.1 of Annex VII of EC Directive 2001/85/EEC.
